Formula used
BMI is a simple screening number. It does not measure body fat directly, so a muscular person can show a high BMI while being healthy.
Worked example
Example: 70 kg, 175 cm
Height in metres = 1.75 m, so height² = 3.0625
BMI = 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9
Category: Normal weight (18.5 – 24.9)
BMI ranges for Asian and Indian adults
The WHO standard cut-offs are Underweight below 18.5, Normal 18.5–24.9, Overweight 25–29.9 and Obese 30 or above. Because South Asians tend to carry more body fat at the same BMI, Indian health guidelines commonly treat 23–24.9 as overweight and 25 or above as obese. If you are of South Asian origin and your BMI is between 23 and 25, it is worth also checking your waist size and body fat percentage.
Tips for accurate results
- Weigh yourself in the morning, before eating, for a consistent reading.
- Measure height without shoes, standing straight against a wall.
- BMI is not designed for children, pregnant women or competitive athletes — use age-specific charts or body-fat measurement instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
For most adults a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy. For South Asian adults, a BMI under 23 is often recommended.
Not fully. Muscle is denser than fat, so athletes may get an "overweight" BMI while having low body fat. A body fat calculator gives a better picture for them.
The adult formula is the same at every age after 20, but older adults naturally lose muscle, so the same BMI can mean more body fat later in life.
