How to use the FD Calculator

  1. Enter the deposit amount.
  2. Enter the interest rate offered by the bank (check senior citizen rates if applicable).
  3. Enter the tenure and choose years, months or days.
  4. Select the compounding frequency — most banks use quarterly — and click Calculate.

Formula used

Maturity = P × (1 + r ÷ n)n × t

Worked example

₹1,00,000 at 7% for 5 years, compounded quarterly

n = 4, t = 5, so there are 20 compounding periods

Maturity value ≈ ₹1,41,478

Interest earned ≈ ₹41,478 (before tax)

Tax on FD interest

FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. Banks deduct TDS once interest crosses the yearly threshold (higher for senior citizens); submitting Form 15G/15H avoids TDS if your total income is below the taxable limit. Tax-saver FDs (5-year lock-in) qualify for Section 80C deduction under the old tax regime.

Tips for accurate results

  • Splitting a large deposit into several FDs (laddering) keeps money accessible without breaking one big FD.
  • Premature withdrawal usually carries a 0.5–1% penalty on the rate.
  • Compare small finance bank rates, but stay within the ₹5 lakh DICGC insurance cover per bank.

Frequently Asked Questions

For most Indian banks, yes, for cumulative FDs. Non-cumulative FDs pay interest out monthly or quarterly instead of compounding.

You receive the rate applicable for the period actually held, minus a penalty, so the return is lower than shown here.

Deposits up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank are insured by DICGC.

How FD Returns Work

Fixed Deposits offer guaranteed returns with interest compounded at regular intervals. The interest rate is fixed at the time of booking the FD. Banks typically compound quarterly for FDs.

A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t)
Where n = compounding frequency

Example

₹2,00,000 at 7% for 3 years, compounded quarterly:
Maturity ≈ ₹2,46,287
Interest ≈ ₹46,287
